What to Expect:

Introduction to Wrestling:

Welcome Session: The clinic will begin with a brief introduction from the coaches, explaining the goals of the session, the importance of sportsmanship, and the basics of wrestling.

Overview of the Sport: Coaches will explain the rules, terminology, and structure of a typical wrestling season. This helps kids (and their parents) understand what wrestling is all about before diving into the physical aspects.

Warm-Up & Stretching:

Group Warm-Up: To prevent injury and get the kids ready for the activity, a warm-up session will begin the clinic. This typically includes dynamic stretching, basic agility drills, and light cardiovascular exercises.

Focus on Flexibility & Mobility: Flexibility is key in wrestling, so a portion of the warm-up will involve stretches aimed at improving joint mobility and range of motion.

Basic Wrestling Techniques:

Stance and Movement: Kids will learn the fundamental wrestling stance—how to position their body for balance, strength, and speed. They will also practice basic movements like shifting weight, advancing, retreating, and changing levels.

Takedowns: The clinic will introduce simple takedowns, showing the kids how to safely bring their opponent to the mat, emphasizing control, balance, and technique over brute force.

Positioning & Control: Wrestlers will also learn the basics of controlling their opponent from the top and bottom positions, including how to break their opponent’s posture and maintain dominant positions.

Partner Drills:

Working with a Partner: Wrestlers will practice techniques with a partner, which helps them understand how moves work in a real situation. Coaches will provide guidance, correcting form and ensuring safety.

Focus on Safety & Respect: Coaches will emphasize that wrestling is a contact sport, but it’s important to be respectful, gentle, and aware of the other person’s well-being during practice.

Conditioning Activities:

Endurance Drills: Wrestling requires strength and endurance, so there will be some conditioning exercises incorporated into the clinic. These will include bodyweight exercises like push-ups, squats, and core work, which will help the kids build strength and stamina for the sport.

Fun Competitive Games: To keep things fun and engaging, there may be some light-hearted wrestling games or challenges, which can help kids learn wrestling principles while enjoying themselves.
